According to the DfES in their ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ Manifesto, “Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.”
The outdoor environment can offer rich learning experiences not found in indoors and an outdoor classroom is ideal for an evolving curriculum, providing sensory experiences leading to greater levels of creativity and understanding.
At Yewdale School teachers are encouraged to use the outdoor classroom both within and beyond the school grounds, there is a huge emphasis on taking learning outdoors.
In Summer 2010 the Foundation Unit outdoor space was totally revamped, giving the children an exciting new area in which to explore, learn and play. The new Wetpour Surfacing provides a safe impact absorbent area for children to play. The Music Range in this area includes the Bongos, Chimes and Rain Wheel. We also have Ocean Splash centre for water play, as well as a large sandpit. There is a story telling area with a large Story tellers chair and colourful mushroom seats for the children. Everything is very colourful and stimulating for the children.

In our society and workplace today technology and computers are playing an increasingly important role in our lives. With these changes come a need for new skills and understanding and an ability to apply them in problem solving situations.
At Yewdale School it is our desire to equip our pupils with these skills, to ensure they are at the forefront of cutting edge technology and are given the best advantages possible as they leave to to face the rigours of secondary and higher education and eventually work.
We would ideally like to equip each of our individual pupils with a net book (a mini laptop) when they enter the Junior Department in Year 3, we hope that each pupil could have their own net book to use in class and throughout the next four years of their primary education. To this end we have come up with a scheme to work with parents to maximise the resources we have and ensure that our pupils are at the forefront of new technological advantages.
Yewdale School purchase the net books and contributes a third of the cost with parents asked to pay two thirds. School maintains the net book via our school ICT maintenance contract. Children also have access to all our age related educational software for which we have site licences.
Parents are able to pay in instalments and when the total cost is paid the children are able to take their net book home on an evening and weekend. As the school has contributed to the purchase we formally retain a third part share of the net book during the time the child attend Yewdale School but relinquish this share for a peppercorn payment of 1 penny when children leave school in Year 6. The net books are covered by schools insurance for accidental damage during the time that the net book is in school. If the net book is damage outside school or on the way to school it is the parent’s responsibility.
If a net book malfunctions a spare computer is provided by school for the time it takes for our ICT experts to make repairs.
All net book users and owners have to sign up to the schools contract for safe computer and internet use. |
