The adults who help us in our class are:
Welcome to Dickens class page. We are a fantastic group of year five pupils who are determined to be the best we can be! On this page you can see all of our brilliant achievements and the activities that we complete throughout the year.
In this five weeks of our fifth term, of our fifth year (that's a lot of fives) our learning is going to be based around our new topic Look Hear. In this topic, we will be learning all about light and sound and how our bodies see and hear everything around us.
In term four our learning is based on our topic Water for Everyone. In this topic, we will be exploring the uses of water and investigate how water gets to the tap.
We will explore how water is a very valuable resource and discuss places around the world which does not have access to clean water. We will celebrate Water Aid's World Water Day on Wednesday 22nd March, by completing a water carry to experience transporting water across a mile distance.
As part of our topic Miss McIntosh has organised lots of exciting opportunities for professionals from United Utilities to come and speak to us about their role in supplying water. The Eden Rivers Trust will also visit us to teach us about the wildlife around Carlisle's river and how to classify these animals. We will then visit the River Caldew to look at the man made impacts on rivers.
Below is a copy of the termly forecast of learning and our letter to parents which tells you all about what we will do within our topic.
Making Things Go
Exit point - For our exit point we made model cars using recycled material. Our success criteria was that we had to make sure that it could go.
From Monday 13th to Thursday 16th February, we completed our Bikeability training. First, we practised on the school yard how to indicate to show the direction we were turning and how to complete basic manoeuvres. We also discussed how to ensure that we were dressed safely and check our bikes to ensure they are safe.
Then we went out onto the roads to put this all into practice and achieve our level two certificates.
Internet Safety Day - Tuesday 7th February 2017
For Internet Safety Day we learnt all about how to stay safe online. Miss Pickthall told us in assembly how to stay 'smart' online. We created some posters to remind us of the rules.
Here and Now, There and Then
We really enjoyed learning about World War Two as our topic. One of our favourite lessons was when Mrs Lloyd told us all about her grandfather and the role he played in the war as a member of the Polish army.
Here are some pieces of our artwork from our first project of our create a scene topic in art. For this piece of work, pupils were focusing on shape and shading to create effect.
Thanks to all those who came to our assembly. We hope that you enjoyed it!
For our entry point into our new IPC topic, we went out onto the school field to participate in a scavenger hunt. During this we were searching using clues Miss McIntosh gave us. Here is a picture of the materials we collected in order to build a fire.
Our first topic this year has been Brainwave. In this topic we explored how we learn and how we can become better learners. For one of our tasks we became teachers to teach the year six how to make origami. This helped us to experience learning and teaching skills to others.
On this newsletter you can see all the areas that the pupils in Dickens class will be exploring in term one. This term we will be exploring the topics Brainwave and Extreme Survivors. Please visit this page to see our progress throughout the term.
